The Nurse as a Systems Manager

Nurses have historically been  advocates for quality patient-centered health care.   They are no strangers to the concerns of health care cost to the consumers, as well as , to the providers.  In this changing world of health care, who better than the Professional Nurse to assist with the management of  health care systems. 

The needs of a successful health care delivery system is dependent on its ability to integrate information between services,  demonstrating quality care while evaluating process,  and cost. A Professional Nurse  specializing in Systems Management brings the  clinical expertise of direct patient care, organizational design,  program planning, evaluation, and informatics.

Informatics has been defined as the combination of information technology with information sciences.  Nurses have always adapted to the use of new technologies introduced at the bedside to evaluate physiological systems.  Now the epigenesis of Nursing Informatics has taken nurses to the realm of  analyzing, designing, and implementing information systems to enhance quality of care, assist in cost containment, and facilitate accountability.

Consumer health  has become an added skill  to nursing informatics to enhance delivery of health care education to consumers.  The need for up-to-date treatment modalities, practice guidelines and linkages to outside resources  become an integral part of  a health care delivery systems.
